Synopsis

Without the comfort of her glasses, Janelle takes the opportunity to challenge the connection she has with herself and her surroundings. Unable to see clearly beyond 9 cm, the freedom that she initially feels turns quickly into a feeling of isolation, where she is unable to connect visually to those around her. Janelle begins to imagine a world where nobody can see clearly beyond their own noses. She comes to realise that this imaginary world might not be so far away. According to research by Brien Holden Vision Institute in collaboration with the World Health Organisation indicates that:

  • By 2050, half of the world’s population will be myopic; about 5 billion people

  • Of these, one billion will have high myopia

  • Myopia will be a main cause of permanent blindness worldwide.

Insight documents Janelle's journey interspersed with interviews of various Latin Americans and travellers from all walks of life. These interviews contextualise and explore the relationships people have with myopia, creating a deeper and more collective dialogue in Janelle's experience. Playing a pivotal role in the telling of Janelle's story, some interviewees emphasise that we already live in a blurry world. Janelle begins to perceive that with unclear vision, we are not blinded, but rather, we have more clarity because we experience the world differently; internally.

Through Janelle’s experiences, Insight invites us to question: regardless of our visual capacity, how clearly do we see the world?
